Pillars begins title defence away at Heartland

Reigning GLO Premier League champions, Kano Pillars, will begin its title defence against Heartland in Owerri.

This was the highlight of the week one fixtures billed for March 7-8 released on Thursday in Abuja . Enyimba will be at home to next door foes, Akwa United, while Dolphins FC will be home to Kwara United in a weekend action in Port Harcourt where Sharks FC also faces a massive challenge against Sunshine Stars.

Other fixtures have El-Kanemi hosting Nasarawa United, while Giwa will also be at home toAbia Warriors. Warri Wolves will be guest of Gabros even as Rangers will travel to Taraba where it will play Taraba FC.

The draws conducted with much fanfare at the Transcorp Hilton Hotel, Abuja was witnessed by dignitaries, among them Director General of the National Sports Commission (NSC), Gbenga Elegbeleye.

Elegbeleye commended the out-going leadership of the LMC headed by Nduka Irabor for the much improvement witnessed in the league in the last three years.

He noted that players in the local league played key roles in the country’s Nations Cup victory two years ago and expressed confidence of sustained performance of continental cup flag bearers in current campaign.

Meanwhile Irabor has challenged football fans across the country to support their own by trooping out to league venues instead of patronising advanced league of Europe .

He said that it was by such gestures that local talents would helped to mature to big players.

As part of preparations for kick-off of the Professional Football League season, the Nigeria Football Federation will hold a seminar for Premier League referees on Thursday, March 5.

A seminar for match commissioners has already been slated for March 2-3 in Abuja , with another seminar for Match Assessors to hold in Abuja at a date to be determined.

Chairman of the NFF Referees Committee, Yusuf Ahmed Fresh, confirmed the dates to thenff.com.

He also disclosed that a seminar for referees in the National League and Nationwide League will hold in the different zones March 7-8.
