Soothsayers and 2015 poll predictions

By Ajibola Abayomi, Lagos
The 2015 general elections, particularly, the presidential poll held on March 28, will go down the history lane as the most keenly contested in the nation.
Months to the poll, Nigerians were inundated with all sorts of gimmicks, propagandas, electioneering issues and other designed agendas, all geared towards swaying the electorate to back one candidate or the other.

For the first time, political parties and keen followers of the build up to the race were soaked in tension over assumed outbreak of violence during and after the election among other things.

At the center of the drama on another hand were men of God and others who claimed to have relationship with the Supreme Being busy deploring all arsenals at their disposal to gain relevance.

Spiritualists and worship centers had a field day as politicians and their supporters sought help from different quarters.

A renowned cleric, Pastor Enough Adeboye, the General Oversea of Redeem Christian Church of God while hosting  President Goodluck Jonathan of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the Vice Presidential candidate of All Progressives Congress (APC), Professor Yemi Osinbajo, now VP-Elect, governors and top government functionaries at the February edition of the church’s Holy Ghost Congress had to calm the nerves of his large congregation and other Nigerians by advising them not to bother less about who would win the poll.
The GO while delivering his sermon said before the creation of Nigeria, God had already known who would be the next president, hence, no need to panic or worry.

However, some other clerics were bold and resolute on their pronouncements.
They reel out prophecies naming whom they claimed had been ordained as winner.

Clerics in virtually all the known faiths put their integrity at stake under the guise of ‘speaking the mind of God’, a development that later made  many who had respect for their callings to question the source of their revelations.

While the political upbeat lasted, Saturday Independent accommodated a passionate Lagos based politician, Dr Leonard Shogunro, who claimed to have embarked on spiritual journey to China and Pakinstan for consultation to satisfy his curiosity about the outcome of the poll.
Upon his return, he told our reporter that: “I went to Pakistan, Indian and up to the extreme end of China in Yung where I consulted celestial board of oracles from the orbit. I wanted revelation concerning the political situation in Nigeria.  I was told nothing would stop the victory of President Goodluck Jonathan in 28 states including Lagos State.
“I was told that; although, there would be some uproar in some states after Jonathan is announced as winner but that will eventually die down with time. The oracle said General Muhammadu Buhari (rtd) of All Progressives Congress (APC) was no match for him.”

As if that was not enough, the Witches and Wizards Association of Nigeria (WITZAN) were not left out.
They made their input through their National Coordinator and Spokesman, Dr Okhue Iboi, who boldly declared that they have given victory to President Jonathan in their coven ahead of the poll.
His words: “President Jonathan has been ordained to continue his reign in 2015. The witches in the Northern states were the ones that moved the motion in support of Jonathan and all of us voted for him. They said they loved what he has done for the Northerners in the area of road constructions, schools, agriculture and other amenities their children have benefited from… He has the support of all witches to continue in office. I don’t see General Muhammadu Buhari ruling this country.”

Days before the poll, Sat Guru Maharaj Ji, the Spiritual Leader of One Love Family who resides in Ibadan at a location revered to as the Highest Spiritual Center in the Universe was emphatic in his own comment too.
“There is no vacancy for Buhari at Aso Rock. President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan is the verifiable divine choice of the forthcoming presidential election.

“As the Living Perfect Master of creation in whose hands the fate of Nigerian project lies spiritually, I declare divinity’s decision to return Jonathan to Aso Rock over Muhammadu Buhari.
“I had publicly and sufficiently advised Buhari against nursing the ambition to rule Nigeria again. Superior forces are actually in-charge of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. I am at the helm of these great and unseen primordial powers of creation”Guru said.

Prior to that, precisely on October 18, 2014, the popular Kaduna based Islamic cleric, Sheikh Ahmad Gumi added colour to the seeming political cloud in a letter he addressed to the APC presidential candidate saying: “General Buhari, please step down for peace, unity and stability of Nigeria because your followers are fanatical, irrational, sentimental and they are many, not few. In the North, people think that General (Buhari) is light whereby they can get salvation, but it’s a false light, it will destroy them.”

As the saga continues to unfold, different Christians clerics came up with varied revelations that questioned who among them truly heard from God.
One could not but wonder, where was the confusion coming from? But the bible made it clear in the book of 1 Corinthians 14:33 that: “For God is not the authour of confusion, but of peace, as in all churches of the saints.”

The scripture was also explicit on how to recognise the true spirit of God in 1 John 4:2-3 2:

“This is how you can recognise the Spirit of God: Every spirit that acknowledges that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God, but every spirit that does not acknowledge Jesus is not from God. This is the spirit of the antichrist, which you have heard is coming and even now is already in the world.”
Among the array of men of God, two clerics stood out. They both remind one of 2 Peter 1:21  which reads: “For prophecy never had its origin in the human will, but prophets, though human, spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit.”
At first, Reverend Father Camillus Ejike Mbaka’s message appeared unpopular and strange to many Nigerians who thought it was impossible to unseat an incumbent president in through the ballot box.

Nevertheless, the fearless, Catholic priest and founder of Adoration Ministry Enugu’s words went viral after he conducted a spiritual test he said signaled the defeat of President Jonathan.
He wasted no time to declare in January this year that the President won’t be reelected.
The priest said he released some birds to ‘go and fight for Jonathan and according to him, one of the birds which he said symbolised the President failed to fly during the visit of his wife, Patience, to the Adoration ground.
“All the other birds, I released flew away but the healthiest of them, which is Jonathan’s bird, could not fly. I tried to make it fly but it could not fly,” he recalled.

“I don’t know Buhari. I have never sat with him before. I am not being partisan, but I want total change in Nigeria. Buhari cannot make Nigeria an Islamic country because we are in democracy.”
The position of the priest expectedly attracted anger from symphasers of the President, but he stood his ground as true man of God even despite alleged attempts on his life.

Also, like the biblical prophets who foretold the future, since 2013, Primate Ayodele Elijah Babatunde, the founder of INRI Evangelical Spiritual Church, Oke-Afa, Lagos kept faith with his prophecy as published in Saturday Independent.
In October 2013, he had revealed that: “PDP undermined God. What you are witnessing now in the party is just a tip of the iceberg. If President Goodluck Jonathan contests the 2015 election, he will find it difficult to win. He needs to consult God for proper direction. I have said what God wants from him is conduct of free and fair poll, then, his name will be written in gold.”
When he was asked to comment on the state of the nation as part of his predictions for 2015 on January 3, he insisted that: “No matter what, Jonathan will be the last PDP President in Nigeria. I don’t see a landslide victory in the presidential election… Jonathan will not take Nigeria to the Promised Land.”

But other gifted pastors had different revelations.
Apostle Fredrick, Senior Pastor of Wonder City Chapel and President of the BB Frederick Ministries, Ghana said:  “Nigerians should watch out for the second term of His Excellency President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan. Although it looks very challenging with him and his ruling party now, yet the Lord says Nigerians shouldn’t lose hope in Jonathan.”
“As long as I’m concerned (sic) as a man gifted by God to see the past, the current and the future beyond the curtains of the natural, I know by the inspiration of the Almighty that President Jonathan is the set man for Nigeria.”
However, Pastor Matthew Ashimolowo, Senior Pastor of Kingsway International Christian Centre (KICC) was very tactful in his own prediction. He said: “For Nigeria, the Lord showed me, who will win the election. I will not mention his name, because I have to be politically neutral. But when the president’s name is announced, 20 percent of a certain part of the nation will not agree. Eventually, after negotiation they will. We will agree that we’re one.”

Another Abuja based cleric, Prophet Joshua Iginla said: “No matter how powerful or well-organised 2015 election is, it will be faulted. I am not a politician nor belong to any political party. I am just speaking God’s mind. The person sitting on the seat might not be perfect, but he will retain the seat. It’s not guess-work.”

However, it will be a battle between the lion and the tiger…Shortly after the election, especially on the night of the election, there will be great vandalisation. I see cars being burnt, lives killed. The President and his wife should pray that the first lady would finish the tenure together and not losing one before the end of their tenure.”
Apostle Johnson Suleman, an Edo State based popular cleric also said “I see President Goodluck Jonathan coming back but trouble… Patience Jonathan needs serious prayers.
Revelation of a foremost seer, Primate Theophilus Oluwasaanu Olabayo, founder, Evangelical Church of Yahweh was different from the rest.

“God has revealed to me that if at all there is going to be presidential election, it will be inconclusive just like (the June 12,) that we had during the time of the late Chief MKO Abiola who flew the flag of the Social Democratic Party under the military administration of General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida” he said.
Josiah Chukwuma Onuoha of Christ Foundation Miracle International Chapel, Lagos also spoke out his mind saying:
“The thing is that Buhari’s case will even be worse. Buhari has no grace to rule this country again. He is being pushed into it by selfish, diabolic elements. Let him go and seek God the way true Moslems do.”
At last, when the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) collated and announced the result of the poll, Buhari emerged victorious.
It even beats the imagination of many doubting Thomases that his main opponent, President Goodluck Jonathan exhibited high level of maturity and statesmanship by congratulating him before the Professor Attahiru Jega, the INEC boss made public the final election figure.
Then what becomes of the seers, prophets and their predictions?
Guru Maharaj Ji and some others were not short of words to explain why their pronouncements failed to see the light of the day.
The Ibadan based Living Perfect Master said: “It was true I pronounced Jonathan as winner of 2015 presidential election. Well, to start with, I am waiting to see the type of petition to be presented by the aggrieved party at the tribunal over the poll.
“However, let me state that Jonathan goofed the moment he started patronising the churches and pastors that were calling dead names. I am here in this village. I am the only one that said call me and I will answer you anywhere. That is real. I was told pastors were given billions of naira. Am I not a Nigerian? Can’t the President consider those meditating with me?
“He thought they don’t like good things of life like others? I was not bribed to support him neither am I seeking personal gains. It is up to Buhari, the President –Elect to heed the warnings of the father of creation for him to do well.”
Dr Okhue, has these to say on the prophesy of the witches and wizards:
“Yes the witches not only backed the reelection of President Jonathan, we actually predicted victory for him before the election. We stood by that until four days to the election when our members from the north stormed and disrupted our meeting at Zuma Rock in Abuja. They revolted against our consensus to back Jonathan.
“We had gone to the meeting to pray for peaceful poll when suddenly the red and black witches invaded our meeting. Although, we knew they were in support of peaceful election, they told us that Jonathan can’t be president. Before their arrival, there was heavy rainfall. After that, a strange voice was shouting in the midst of the storm that Buhari was the right man.

“God created us. We don’t have power of our own. We had wished Jonathan would win based on our conviction at our meeting but a superior voice from God upturned it. As far as we are concerned, Buhari’s choice was divine. There was nothing we could do. Humanly, we tried our best but the ultimate power resides in God” Okhue said.
The oracle man, however, took a different stand, while defending his words. “The election was rigged by northern leaders in collaboration with election officers who registered under aged voters. What I was told in Pakistan was true but the margin of fraud that charcterised the election was unprecedented. Please let Nigerians know this.

Truth must not be buried” Dr Shogunro said.
For Primate Ayodele, he said: “I simply return all adoration to almighty God. I am just a mere tool in His hands. Let no one rival God because He is not a man that would repent neither will it share His glory with any man too. I want our leaders to repent and humbly serve the nation in the interest of the poor.”
Worried about how people were being misled by some religious leaders, the leader of Ogboni Aborigine, Oba Yusuf Akanbi Olaitan has words for Nigerians.
“Some say they are pastors, Imams or witches. All I know is that God is the only all knowing being. Before the poll, we offered sacrifice to the mother-earth after consulting Ifa oracle. We sent out messages that people should wear white cloth on the election day. That was why we had peaceful poll.
“Ogboni members are not seeking any personal glory over the peaceful conduct of the poll like those predicting doom. Let them stop playing God. The only one who owes the key to the future is God.”
