As part of efforts to ensure that tanker drivers park at the approved park at the airport, the Managing Director of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), Engr. Saleh Dunoma, said that the agency has resolved to ensure absolute compliance of tanker drivers with the rules of their engagement.
FAAN’s decision to strictly enforce the rules is coming on the heels of the glaring indiscriminate parking of fuel tankers at the Lagos Airport road.
The authority, Daily Independent learnt, was worried that if the indiscriminate parking was not decisively checked, it may turn into another scenario such as being witnessed in Apapa, where the activities of these operators had caused serious gridlock on the road leading to the Port to the detriment of the businesses in the area and other roads users.
Investigation by our correspondent revealed that most of the tankers had business at the airport but despite that they park their fuel tankers on the Airport road, a situation FAAN said it would not condone.
FAAN said that the rules must be adhered to as far as parking and operating around the airport environment was concerned.
The Managing Director stated this in Lagos during an interactive forum with journalists.
Responding to questions from the journalists, Dunoma noted that the notorious act of parking tankers along the airport road would no longer be tolerated as the act was capable of jeopardising safety and security of the airport, which would adversely affect airport users.
He noted that an adequate parking space had already been provided for the tanker drivers by the authority, explaining that there was a standing agreement between FAAN and the leaders of the tanker drivers’ union to only make use of the aviation designated trailer parks for parking purposes, except during loading or discharging of fuel at the tank farms.
Dunoma, therefore, directed relevant security agencies to rise up to the challenge of enforcing strict compliance with the extant rules of parking for tanker drivers within the airport environment.
